BACKGROUND

Professor Humphrey Nwosu was appointed by President Ibrahim Babangida to serve as chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC). He held this position from 1989 until 1993. Professor Nwosu was born on October 2, 1941.

EARLY LIFE

Nwosu was born on October 2nd, 1941, and went on to become a political science professor at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He was a member of the cabinet of Samson Omeruah, who was the governor of the old Anambra State.

During his time in that cabinet, he assisted traditional rulers in obtaining staffs of office and salaries, and he also helped settle land disputes within and between communities.

In addition to that, he presided over a Federal Technical Committee that investigated the implementation of Civil Service Reforms in the state and local government services. In 1989, following the resignation of his predecessor (and former mentor), Eme Awa, who had been in a quarrel with Ibrahim Babangida, the individual was appointed chairman of the NEC.

POLITICAL CAREER

The election held on June 12, 1993, which was viewed as the freest and fairest election to date and in which Chief Moshood Abiola was thought to have won, was directed by Nwosu, who served as the election's director. Nwosu's panel was the one that came up with the revolutionary voting mechanism known as Option A4 and the Open ballot system.

Nwosu had already disclosed a significant number of the election results by the time the military dictatorship gave him orders to cease making any further announcements. In 2008, he released a book in which he argued that Babangida was not to blame for the election being thrown out, and he said this in the book. The book came under heavy fire for the fact that it failed to provide an accurate depiction of what had taken place.
